TAICHUNG COUNTY
Taichung City is a vibrant metropolis located in central Taiwan, known for its bustling night markets, beautiful parks, and modern art scene.

Taichung
Taichung County is a county located in central Taiwan, surrounding Taichung City. It is a largely rural area with a rich history and culture. Visitors to Taichung County can explore the picturesque Sun Moon Lake, which is located in the mountains and is a popular destination for boating and hiking. The county is also home to several hot springs, such as the Dongpu Hot Spring and the Guguan Hot Spring, which offer a relaxing escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Foodies will enjoy the local specialties of the area, such as the famous Taiwanese sausage and the mouth-watering pineapple cakes. The county is also known for its traditional handicrafts, such as pottery and weaving, which can be found in local markets and shops. Overall, Taichung County is a charming and authentic Taiwanese destination that offers a taste of the country's natural beauty and cultural heritage.
I’ll be honest, I didn’t like living in Taichung at all. I found it boring, with a very lame nightlife. It was conservative, and the people were kinda assholes. I did live in Beitun district which was close to my work, but super boring. I was surrounded by couples with young kids and being single, it just wasn't a good location in Taichung. I had a car, so parking was difficult as well. Taichung boasts a mountain range to the south and ocean to the west. It has a beautiful center with nice parks, interesting buildings and sculptures with a modern feel.
Taichung is located in the west central part of Taiwan. It is the second largest city in Taiwan. The weather is great! Winters are perfect though summers can be pretty intense, but not too bad.
Rainbow Village ❤️🏠
It’s a village of small buildings with paintings all over them. Uhh…It’s cool, but not mind blowing. I went there early when I moved here. This was when I had some free time and didn’t know what to do. I would Google “things to do in…” and this came up.
National Taichung Theater ❤️
The architecture of this building is really cool. The opera house also resides here. I liked taking photos here.
Taiwan Museum of Art ❤️🏠
It's an art museum. I don’t hate museums, but many museums change over time and have different exhibits.
National Museum of Natural Science ❤️🏠
It's a science museum.
National Botanical Garden ❤️
I enjoyed this place. It's located near the science museum and while exploring the concrete jungle, the garden gives you a break as you are completely immersed in nature and can zone out, hide, and relax.
Taichung Park ❤️🏠
It’s a cool little park with a huge goat statue, nice place to take pictures, especially some long exposures at night. The location is also good. Lots of places to explore around it for shopping. My go to photography shop was close to this park.
Gaomei Wetlands ❤️🏠📸🚗⭐
I really, really like the wetlands, though it can be extremely crowded on the weekends. I captured some beautiful sunsets here. Mudskippers dash about the muddy landscape, crabs can be seen in the hundreds. You can also walk down the wooden path, take off your shoes and walk into the wetland itself! I took pictures of the Neowise comet when it presented itself a couple years ago.
Dakeng trail 1 Dakeng Trail 4 Dakeng Trail 7
Where I lived we had the Dakeng trails. Trails of varying degrees of difficulty. They are pretty cool. I didn’t hike them all.
Cian Yue Building 📸⭐
I have been here twice. I never really got the whole idea of it. It's basically a run-down building complex, like a large apartment. A graffiti group called Escape Plan X took it over, apparently. The first time I went I found some people living here. I met a group of young people doing something there, but they were kind of assholes when I tried talking to them and wouldn’t feed me much information. Met a young trans woman sweeping about, I said hi to her, she completely ignored me. It's a dope ass spot! It looks like a run-down crack house but it's not. It's littered with art, photographs, graffiti, murals, and run-down equipment. It would be an awesome crack house, party spot, and hang out. I went a 2nd time with a local, and when we left, we were told that we shouldn’t even be in there. The 2nd time it was empty. We saw no one. There was also a 100NT price to enter but no one was collecting. A bit confusing, but worth it to check out.
Filipino Disco
So it goes that many Vietnamese, Philippinos, and Indonesians work Monday to Saturday and have to get up early on Monday. So, these groups took over some run-down mall to have their clubs during the day that ended around 8pm. I decided to check it out quickly when I arrived in Taiwan. First, I went to the Indonesian club, and they welcomed me, but I started asking questions and that bothered them for some reason, and they decided not to let me in. Next, I went to the Vietnamese one. I was excited because I just got done living in Vietnam for 3 years and figured the few words I knew and the fact that I was living there would get me in. Wrong! I didn’t get within 10ft of the door before 3 little Vietnamese guys were like, “NOPE! You ain’t coming in here!” I then went to the 3rd and final place. The Pinoy/ays! They spoke the best English and welcomed me in, no problem. The ambience was on hit, but the music sucked. They had a twerking competition, but yeah…I hung out for about 2 hours. It was ok. If I wasn’t alone, it might have been better. I think it's on the 6th floor of this mall. I only went once, and it was within my first month of moving here.
The Cave
If we could combine the ambiance of the Filipino Disco with the music from The Cave, we would have had the best club in Taiwan. The Cave catered to some underground electro among other things. Cool venue, decent music, sometimes pretty good, but the crowd sucked. It would be like me and 5 other people there. No one was dancing, except me. I came to the conclusion that most of the people who showed up were part of the DJs friends and/or the bartender's friends. There were a couple of times that there were like 30 people, but again, the vibe was always lame. Too much sitting, too much texting, and too much parking on the dance floor.
Graffiti Cartoon Alley
This fun little spot had a lot of murals related to Japanese Anime. If you like that stuff, like I do, check it out.
Dali Art Plaza ❤️🏠
A cool place with some interesting artwork outside to check out.
Wufeng Lin Family Garden ❤️🏠
Taichung is hella lame. I usually stay home during weekdays, but sometimes this hermit left his cave to explore, and he was happy he did. I wasn’t mind blown here, but it was nice to drive out here and relaxing to walk around.
Zero Egg Platform ❤️🏠
Another place I found in Taichung, when I’m tired of slumbering in my cave I exit. It was nice to walk around. Some cool murals. It's relaxing here. You can bike or walk around.
Yuanzui Mountain Trailhead
I hated this hike. I went with NY Chen and she said it was easy. We got to the top and you have to use ropes and shit. If you fall you die type shit. It was easy up until that point. I don’t like hiking unless I’m documenting it and it was a crap day, so I didn’t even really take photos…BUT one thing made it worth it, and I wish that I video recorded it. At the top you can use the ropes and all that stuff OR you can be like the guy I saw. This dude was barefoot. He started walking down a super narrow probably 6-inch-wide part of the mountain. If you fall, you DIE. He started walking and I yelled, “Look at this mutha fucka! What are you doing?” That got people's attention because I was using foul language, and I pointed to the guy. He literally walked the whole length, which was at least 100 yards BAREFOOT. While the rest of us were struggling and going up and down, he just floated to the other side. It was the most amazing thing I ever saw in Taiwan and maybe in my top 10 amazing things ever! It was INSANE!!! I am not doing this again, but I am glad I did on that day.
Cultural Heritage Park ❤️🏠
This is an interesting area with some artwork outside and various little exhibits. Some are in English, and others are only in Chinese. They change up every so often. There were also lots of arts and crafts shops with some cool art works.
I loved this place, not because of this destination but the drive. This place was a bit hard to find as it's part of a temple and I wasn’t sure if it was open. I ended up walking in and no one hassled me. The pond itself is beautiful but you can walk around it in 3 minutes. The temple is interesting, and the area is well kept. Across from the temple is a fishpond for fishing. There were a lot of random places I stopped on this trip. I will not detail them here but will mention them in my favorite drives section.
Fengnian Park ❤️🏠🚗
This was a nice park I found in the mountains. It's small, but a good spot to chill and get out of the city. It was usually empty, and I'd fly my drone here for practice.
